How To Keep Your Pets Stress-Free On New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is far from your dog’s favourite time of year. Fireworks, bells ringing, cars honking their horns at the stroke of midnight are all staples of a rockin’ New Year’s Eve.

Sadly, your dog is sensitive to all these things. Worst case scenario, they may even experience symptoms of stress as bad as diarrhoea from all the noise.

While you can’t stop loud noises from happening or restrict people from partaking in events, you can help your dog stay calm on the big day.

Here are 3 ways to keep your dog stress-free on New Year’s Eve:

    Desensitise them from noises

You can start training your dog to grow accustomed to loud noises by playing a video of fireworks. Have the video play at the lowest possible volume, then gradually increase the volume until you see your dog react to the noise. Remember to do it slowly, so they don’t get overstimulated or stressed out.

    Go for a walk

Do it before the big event! When they’ve exercised enough during the day, they’ll feel more worn out when the fireworks go up at night. You’ll also want to head out a bit earlier in the day so you don’t risk any impromptu fireworks displays.

Distract them with toys & treats

Divert your dog’s attention with a toy or a tasty treat. On a normal day, toys and treats keep them busy at play. When the New Year hits, the same toys and treats will keep them preoccupied from being anxious. You can give them something healthy like Pet Snacks’ dental chews & treats so their mouth stays fresh and clean.

New Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate new beginnings for pet parents. But for our furbabies, it can be a source of stress. But it doesn’t have to be all difficult. Follow these tips to help your dog relax amid the blaring festivities.
